Here on the upper Sunshine Coast of BC, what is locally known as qathet, it seems that almost everybody knows about or has met my dogs. In total, there are 27(!) living here that are all connected to me in some way. This includes the collie mutt grandma named Sophie and the husky-malamute grandpa named Tiko; all but one of their five pups (i.e. Bella, Freya, Darcy, and Butch), and then the 21 puppies I’ve had since 2020.
I was exploring herbs with my dog, and I had considered asking you this question about dog food so glad to find this article! Adding it to my read list.
Hi Todd, while I follow you as an herbalist, I had no idea you were such a devoted animal lover.Thank you for these dear heartfelt stories of your dogs and your interspecies healing.
I came back to read this post, and I'm touched by your funeral pyre as well as the devotion to Cheno and Bella and the whole pack.
The article on dog food was incredibly helpful, thank you. I have been experimenting with a similar route as you. I adopted a springer spaniel from dear friends. Her coat dulled out after continuing to her feed her kibble as they had and it made me look and think further about what I was feeding her. I started with Juliette de Bairacli Levy’s Natural Rearing diet for dogs to the modern equivalents. And I thought of you, thinking of your many puppies and wondered what you did.
Grateful for my local friend who is a grassfed beef producer for meaty bones, but still experimenting. I don't know if I have amounts right - I suspect not as that superior nose has led to many quiches and chickens cooling on the counter to mysteriously disappear.
Oh no! I can report back that my dogs have never gone for any meat thawing or cooked on the counter, but I’m sure they’ve debated the possibility. If you haven’t seen them, I’ve written a few posts on feeding dogs on my clinic website, as follows (or for some reason on substack, see above 👆🏻👆🏻)
